My husband and I have RVed to breweries in 47 states and this one is our favorite. We visited on a slow day and sampled over 10 beers.  They were all delicious.  One of the founders came out to say hello and told us the history of the brewery. We felt like VIPs. We highly recommend this brewery and can't wait to go back. Make sure to check their working hours as some days they are closed.

The beer was good but the “Detroit style” pizza is not Detroit Style. Whomever said this was Detroit style needs to search more on the internet for what Detroit style actually is. Over the Horizon Brewery is hands down one of the best event spots around. We hosted our Juiced Fuel 2 year event here and the setup couldn’t have been more perfect. The outdoor space was awesome—plenty of room for kids to run around while the adults got to hang out and actually enjoy themselves (a win-win). The pizza was bomb and the beer was cold and crisp. Perfect for a hot day. What really stood out though was how easy they made everything. Their team was super helpful from the very beginning all the way through to the end. It felt like they truly cared about making our event a success. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun, laid-back spot that still has all the thoughtful touches to make it special.

They may not have ciders, but they have something way better! Their customizable sour is the absolute best. You can pick syrup flavors to make your own creations. We did blackberry and grenadine and Amazing!!!!!. We will be going back again before our vacation ends. The staff was EXCELLENT! Great to talk to and funny and very helpful. Absolutely wonderful atmosphere!

If you love sours and thick, slushie-style beers, this place is a gold mine. While my wife and I aren’t huge fans of these styles, we still enjoyed a couple of their beers while playing pool and ping pong. Overall, it’s a great spot to try new beers and have a good time hanging out.

This is really cool place to hang out with friends! They have such interesting brews and the concept that is comfortable. The staff is very nice and will help you select the right drinks for your taste pallet. I tried as many as I could handle and had an amazing cheesesteak that I was not expecting from a brewery.

Matter of fact... Im actually thinking about that cheesesteak now... I may be back sooner than I originally expected.

I’ve been waiting to finally have the chance to get to this brewery thanks to their Instagram for giving be daily fomo. Well…I finally made it! I believe I had 8 different sours… which is absolutely unheard of at any other brewery, most were great, others were just good, but overall what a fantastic little brewery. The brews are on the sweet side, so prepare for a bit of a sugar rush. At the end I left with a great experience and a 4pack of my favorite. While I was there on a Sunday afternoon, there was also a trivia game going on. Worth the trip, and if I’m ever back in the area, it’s a must stop to try any and everything that’s new.

Solid smaller brewery. If you like sours at all this is a great place to try several variations from sour to sweet. Their cinnamon stout and golden ale were also very good. This isn't a place to go and have dinner but a place to grab a beer, sit back and relax or play one of the many game options they have available from board games to ping pong and several different video gaming consoles set up free to use. When I went there wasn't any kids but it was kinda late on a school night so there's that. They also have a weekly schedule of happenings at the brewery. Beertender was helpful and friendly. They have crowlers and beers to go which is always nice. If you're already up in North Charleston or especially like sour beers then this is a solid go to!

Have lived in Charleston for 5 years now and have tried every brewery in the area. This is by far the best beer in Charleston. They produce creative but still traditional beer that always brings me back for more. The only downside is that they do not allow dogs. This is quite literally the only reason i visit other breweries. If you look across the street at Edmunds, there are dogs galore and I am sure that more folks would come to Munkle if they were to allow pups.  But other than that, this place rocks and I 100% recommend it.

It seems to be hard lately to find a new-ish brewery that produces creative, but traditional craft beers at such a high level. This isn’t hyperbole. This brewery is producing three impressive styles of beer with incredible craft and precision. The Belgian style beers are true to the process and yet adapted to the unique climate of Charleston, SC. The Belgian Brown is drinkable on a hot summer day, but also so wonderfully complex to be paired with a nice filet or some local shrimp and grits. The Pils is German perfection. The two American style ales I tried were also perfect. No pallet wreckers! Craft is alive and well at this brewery and it’s a lovely place to drop in for an afternoon. Can’t wait to come back and try some of the other special offerings at Munkle. Thank you!

Had a wonderful time with more traditional brews which was refreshing after feeling like everywhere else had a way too many IPAs. Especially enjoyed the saisons and the brunes. We hosted a pre-wedding party at Freehouse for about 90 guests. From our early communication to figure out menu, the owner and staff could not have been more accommodating & pleasant. The space (indoor and outdoor) is ample, the organic beer / beverages and the food are all fantastic. The lone man in the kitchen cranked out 30 pizzas and many apps (those garlic knots!!) in perfect cadence. This place is a credit to Charleston’s craft brewery scene.

A great brewery in the Charleston area. They are just north of downtown and the views are incredible. They have a large covered area as well as plenty of outdoor space to hang out! Awesome beers. Friendly bartender/service and cool vibes. My wife and I got some lunch and her Pork Belly BLT was a hit. Absolutely delicious. I ordered the "Philly Cheesesteak" and it was a miss. Phenomenal service!! We were in town for a dance competition and came as a very large group ( roughly 25 counting the kids). The staff handled it like rockstars! I fully anticipated us overwhelming the kitchen and having a little bit of a wait. Boy was I wrong. Some of our families were getting their food by the time our last group was placing their order. Was expecting better beer based on the Untappd reviews. It’s well crafted and the sours were their best beers but the IPAs lack the hop-bomb profile I’ve come to expect being from the Midwest. West Ashley has amazing beer and some of the best beer in Charleston is something, I regrettably did not know before today. Charles Towne has some awesome selection of brews. All of them seem to be excelling at the specific style the brew master was going for. Oh, you want a Czech Dark Lager? Well, enjoy one of the best. This place is fantastic and so well hidden on Savannah Hwy that I can't believe I have overlooked it. I will be spending more time here in the future from now on.

Hands down best beer in the Charleston area. Check out the ratings on untapped app.  Great IPA, great Gose , low ABV makes a super beach beer.  2022 El Rayo is off the charts.  They also offer a El Rayo slushy which went down way to easy. Two locations Nothing wrong with the Original Savannah Highway venue but the new venue, called “the garden “ is a wonderful place to spend the day or evening.  Still developing the facility but a real nice, family friendly, indoor / outdoor venue.  Do not serve food yet but a taco place and BBQ place 100 yards down the street. Both pair well with beer.

First time at this little brewery and was pleasantly surprised. They pack a lot into such a small place and make use of every inch of space to create several unique niches. The initial taproom is bright clean refreshing clear and precise. Bright coastal vibes. Tried almost all the beers the Under The Oak bourbon barrel aged barleywine was a definite winner followed up by Ubergang and this is coming from someone who normally enjoys lighter beers. These 2 options were still very light and easy drinking but packed with tons of great flavor. Outside there was a great food truck Wedge, tons of seating and an area for the kids to play. Inside through the taproom there's a cozy seating area with all the great smells of a brewery followed by a huge open wharehouse area with a few games and very large TVs to watch the game. They also had some vendors there when we went selling all types of different things so keep an eye on insta to see what's going on.

My wife and I are making the rounds of the many breweries located in the Charleston area. Today we spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Hobcaw in Mt Pleasant to see what they had to offer.! What we found was a great place to hang out and enjoy some really good beer. We ended up doing three flights that enabled us to sample all 12 beers on tap. A wide variety from sours to IPA to stouts with other options mixed in. Our bar tender Steve was knowledgeable and friendly in what turned out to be a relaxing afternoon.  A good food truck on hand Libs offered some tasty options. Large seating area inside and out. Well done will certainly return!

The Whale is essentially a beer tasting collective. It offers a large number of locally brewed beer on tap as well as an extensive collection of canned and bottled local brews. It’s inside The Refinery and has a nice minimalist vibe bar area and out side tables on a large elevated patio. We were there for a late afternoon beer tasting before dinner and were well served by the variety of offerings and a competent bartender. Plenty of onsite parking and food options include the adjacent restaurant and transient food trucks. This is a good addition to the charleston beer community and we recommend a visit. It gets four clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale.

I've been to the whale a number of times, even saw Yung Gravy at the Refinery once and came back for a drink. I'm a big fan of this spot for a few reasons:

Service: the bartenders are always friendly, funny, professional and knowledgeable of what they serve.

Beer list: there's no shortage of exotic or niche picks. They have a rotating tap and a plethora of cans and bottles from countries all over the world. In one of my pictures I'm drinking a beer from Tasmania.

The vibe: great music, dimly lit with a purple neon light, and every time I have gone it's very quiet.

11/10 would recommend. I'm almost scared too many people will find this place.

We arrived and thought we had gone to the wrong place! But tucked around the corner, we found it.

Absolutely love the 80s vibe. They even had a little pop up with vendors and we ended up getting two 80s vintage jackets. It was a windy day though so we stayed inside the bar area.

Very solid beer selection. Got there before it was crowded but did appreciate they let people bring their dogs inside. Would definitely come back here again!

Finally got the chance to try this place, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to our expectations. While we really enjoy Edmund’s Oast beer, the restaurant side didn’t make the same impression. The food was good, and the portions were generous, but something felt missing. My wife ordered the fried catfish with grits, which was the standout dish of the night. My son and I shared the whole chicken, with one half original and the other half Korean style. The original was underwhelming, but the Korean-style chicken was packed with flavor and heat. As for the sides—rice and beans, collard greens, and pasta salad—they were good but nothing particularly memorable.

The service wasn’t bad, just a bit off and felt a little strange. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great, and I can see why reservations are necessary. Overall, I’d rate it a 4.5. It’s a solid spot, but we didn’t leave feeling like it was somewhere we’d come back to.

Easily the best food in Charleston especially for it's price point. Anything with this level of quality and service would easily be $100-200/person in New Jersey or New York. Service was amazing, hell, beyond expectation. I'm also quite frankly a bit shocked how small the bill was for two entrees, a side (which was LARGE), and a drink was. Shawn, our waiter, should be example as to how service should be for other restaurants in the area. Beyond just recommending items, he gave a few recommendations and helped narrow down the options through taste or dietary restrictions. He also recommended several desserts, but due to how delicious and filling the meal became, we sadly weren't hungry enough to fit one in. Sure, Charleston has plenty of amazing options, otherwise I wouldn't want to be a student here, but I think this is a must-have for all tourists and incoming freshman like myself. The atmosphere of the restaurant is just superb. I'd compare the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and most importantly the service to that of an episode of The Bear. It carries perfectly that southern charm mixed with fine dining and a pub. I'm just still baffled how amazing that prime rib was. Hope to be back in August!

Lunch outside is SO GREAT!!  Cool breezes blow. Lots of shady areas and they have fans on.   They have both large picnic tables & large tables with chairs.  Menus wait for you at the tables...you walk over to the bar to place your order & pay & then they carry your order out to ya.!  We arrived about 11:55 a.m. on a Thursday-not even crowded. :) You can have your dog under the table or the baby in a stroller next to the table.

Fried Chicken, Family Vibes and a Fantastic Start to Our Trip!

We stopped at Edmund’s Oast for lunch right after landing in Charleston on July 4th, on our way to our VRBO on Folly Beach -  and it couldn’t have been a better kickoff to our holiday week.

The food was fantastic. We went with the family-style fried chicken, which came with collard greens, rice & beans and mac & cheese. Everything was delicious, it hit the spot for the whole family.

We sat outside, the setup was spacious, relaxed, and welcoming - perfect for easing into vacation mode. The indoor space looked very cool as well, ideal if you’re looking to escape the summer heat.

Restrooms were spotless (always a plus), the service was friendly and efficient.

Dropped in for dinner at the taphouse of a brewery we already love, and ended up getting more than we expected.  The menu leaned into Thai fusion, which was a surprise, but a really welcome one.

We tried the salt chicken, mushrooms and rice noodles, and a papaya salad. Everything came out with bold flavors and bright, fresh ingredients. The salt chicken had a crisp, savory crust and juicy interior, while the mushrooms and noodles packed real heat. I can usually handle spice, but these had me sweating in the best way. The papaya salad added a refreshing crunch and a tangy contrast that helped cool things down.

The beer, of course, was top-tier. Huge variety on tap, and even better when enjoyed right at the source.

Fabulous experience. Came with my best friend who is in the beer industry; we were sent to meet up with Scott Shor.  Because he stepped out, he put us in touch with Julie, a manager, who happened to be at the door. She was super friendly and engaging. She found us a great spot at the bar and made sure we were introduced to the bartender, Hannah. Scott came shortly afterward and gave us a tour of the brewery, which was spotless clean and cool to experience. Aside from getting VIP treatment, the tap room has a great atmosphere, food, 22 lines of excellent beer and great swag. You won’t be disappointed.

Great place and great beer.  We stopped in on a very cold day.  The staff was great.  We were sitting outside on the patio because we had our dog with us.  They came out and put the heaters on for us.  We each had a pint and enjoyed the warm pretzels.  Wow, were those ever good!  Beers were great.  Highly recommend Cerial for Dinner.  All were great, but that was surprisingly amazing.  Prices are great anyway, but we happened to hit Happy Hour with 1/2 price drafts.  If in the area, check this place out. Live in Florida and love the beer selections.  Decided to make a trip to visit.  Was a bit awkward as we had to wander around the bar / picnic area to get someone to acknowledge us. We had a fantastic time at this cozy brewery in the downtown area. Not only do they serve up some great beers, but the food is amazing too! We started with the Roni Jabroni pizza, which came out piping hot and was loaded with toppings. Then we tried the porcini-rubbed prime rib cheesesteak with fries — a perfect choice for a brewery! The sandwich was packed with meat and cheese, and the fries, though a little undercooked, still hit the spot. Overall, this place offers everything we love in a brewery, and we can't wait to return!

This was unexpected to have great sushi and a great brew but that’s exactly what happened. Enjoyed every second here! The interior taproom is small but keeps the space cozy and the atmosphere is very welcoming. The staff went out of their way to be hospitable and friendly the entire time during my visit. Delicious Southern Comfort at Port of Call

We visited Port of Call in Charleston for lunch on a Friday with a party of four and had a great experience from start to finish. We made a reservation in advance and were seated promptly inside near the bar, a cozy and lively spot with a great atmosphere.

I ordered the chicken biscuit sampler, and it did not disappoint. The biscuits were incredibly fresh and buttery, and each variation had its own delicious twist. It was a generous and filling dish, beautifully presented and packed with flavor. You have to try it if you’re visiting!

Overall, the service was friendly, the food came out quickly, and the entire experience was smooth and satisfying. Port of Call is definitely a spot worth checking out for a laid-back, flavorful lunch in Charleston.

Stopped in for lunch before going to the city market. First things first brunch is available everyday until 3 which is awesome. Our server Faith while being new was very knowledgeable and helped us enjoy a wonderful lunch. Great experience! Food was great, and friendly staff. I had a spicy chicken sandwich and my wife had the fried bologna sandwich. Both were excellent! Fried a bit too high a temperature, but they used a fattier chicken cut which ensured juiciness. The fries were really crispy too. It's been years since we've been to this brewery.  It was just as good as we remembered.  The Brisket Grilled Cheese was delicious and enough for two people. I had the Rescue Brew which is a cream ale and my wife had the Air is Salty which is a Gose. Both were delicious and refreshing on a hot SC day. Very pet friendly with plenty of outdoor seating. We do wish they had some big fans outside to help when the breeze isn't blowing.

Cool place! Went here for Frequency Fest. Would love to see more shows here. Their area out back was great with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. The inside had a nice bar with at least 6 taps as well as a frozen drink machine. Staff were friendly and helpful. Not much room for parking except a grass lot a couple of doors down. The Garden is a new addition to Charlestowne Fermentory's lineup. This location is a such a welcome place that allows children while not sacrificing the integrity of the original location. I love both locations, but I'm glad they opened this one up now that I have a child. The patio is incredibly nice and cool, even in August I'm South Carolina.

The beer, if you've seen my other review of the original location is still bangers. I swear this is my new favorite place to drink in Chucktown. They also always have a food truck, so you never go hungry.

All in all, this place is awesome for dogs and children. Definitely come and don't expect anything else.

My wife and I are fans of Charlestown Fermatory.  Absolutely great beer particularly their IPA’s.   Knowledgeable bar tender’s with friendly service. Their new addition “the garden “ is a super place to relax with a great beer in a comfortable atmosphere.  It is both kid friendly and pet friendly but please control your kids and your dog. We may have found a new favorite brewery in the Charleston area! The space is massive, which allows for plenty of room to spread out and enjoy whatever kind of atmosphere you're looking for. This was probably the best brewery I've ever been to in my life. It was on several acres. They had a dock on a creek. Great place for kids to play and enjoy the environment there. I need to go back and give this place another chance. We visited after donating blood for the first time and I was feeling pretty awful already. I didn't even get a chance to try any of the drinks.
We ordered a pretzel with brown mustard and beermento cheese. I did enjoy the twist on pimento cheese made with beer cheese. The pretzel came out hot and fresh. The kids enjoyed it!

We also got the nachos. My only complaint is that I felt the cheese was a little overdone. It really only coated the top layer of nachos so there were only a few good bites before being left with just nachos that were untouched by anything. The cheese acted like a helmet hiding most of the nachos. I really liked the cilantro sauce that was on them! And the jalapenos weren't too spicy, which is how I like them!

My husband had the strawberry ale and enjoyed his drink.

We sat on the back patio which was wide and spacious. It was a little hoppy smelling, so the kids complained, but it was big enough for them to run around because no one was there. The arcade area was for kids 13 and up unless they were supervised. That was a bit of a bummer, but I understand why they do that.

Love the amber beers from this brewery. Favorite is the Scotch Ale shower the Irish Red is good as well.  Reason for four stars is recently bought a six-pack of Irish red ale cans in Mount Pleasant Bottles and tastes more like a sour.  Nothing at all like Irish red I have had in bars on tap.

Typical sports bar atmosphere with many pours on tap and a patio out back.
Bartender was nice and efficient.
Wings were pretty good, very crispy and not abnormally sized ha. Teriyaki flavor was sweet and lemon pepper was salty.
"Tacos Mexcellente" were two tacos - shaved ribeye, seared tuna, or chicken) with mango habanero, citrus cream, peach pico, & sesame seeds. I ordered shaved ribeye, but the texture was more like tender ground beef and pretty greasy. There was grease/liquid dripping with each bite. The tortilla was good, appeared to be a little toasted. In my opinion, the taco just has too much going on. It was hard to focus on one flavor (if that makes sense lol). The bartender recommended this year or two an hour or chicken so maybe I'll actually listen and try that next time.

Hands down one of the best bars on Upper King. Maury and Stephanie are a phenomenal team no matter how busy, you aren’t lacking in any way.
